The Many Seals Of Piedras Blancas

Achievement: #2. Visit 2 National Monuments | #41. Piedras Blancas

For our second entry of our month-long-blog-venture, we decided to stick with the theme of kind-of disappointments, from a misadventure way back in April when we were out in California.

For Christmas a few years back, I got a National Parks Passport Book, and I always try really, really hard to fill in stamps for it when we are out traveling. Unfortunately, this is a crazy difficult task. But we figured, Piedras Blancas is right on the way between Big Sur and Paso Robles, so of COURSE we can stop there and visit the lighthouse and get my stamp!

So uhhhhhh. We were there on a Wednesday. And ummmmmmmmm Piedras Blancas Light Station is closed on Wednesdays.

DAMMIT.

But guess what *wasn’t* closed, and was in full swing in the beginning of April?

ELEPHANT SEAL ROOKERY!!!

Piedras Blancas Seal Rookery
Piedras Blancas is home to one of the most fabulous elephant seal colonies of all time. (OF ALL TIME!)

Piedras Blancas Seal Rookery
There are quite literally a billion seals on the beach there!

Piedras Blancas Seal Rookery
I mean a billion.

Piedras Blancas Seal Rookery
I mean, like, a real billion.

Damn Gina, just watch this video to see how many real, authentic billions of seals hang out on this beach:

DAMN ALL THOSE DAMN CUTE AS HELL SEALS DAAAAAAAAMN.

Piedras Blancas Seal Rookery
There are floppy seals.

Piedras Blancas Seal Rookery
Woeful snuggler seals.

Piedras Blancas Seal Rookery
Smiley seals.

Piedras Blancas Seal Rookery
Bitey seals.

Piedras Blancas Seal Rookery
Flippy-floppy-tossin-sand-upon-mahself seals.

Piedras Blancas Seal Rookery
And about a billion seals that remind me of my dog.

So, to summarize, what we learned about Piedras Blancas:

~ the lighthouse is not always open
~ but seals always be cute as hell

Piedras Blancas Seal Rookery
Cute. As. Hell.

Thumbs up on the adorable seals (though they look more like cats to me, right up to the “bitey” thing).
